How to Fix Elementor Stuck on Loading Screen & Safe Mode Errors (2026 Fixes)

As the world’s most popular visual website builder for WordPress, Elementor powers millions of websites. However, ask any WordPress designer or agency developer about their biggest frustration with the platform, and they will likely cite the exact same nightmare: Elementor getting stuck on an endless gray loading screen or displaying the dreaded “Can’t Load Elementor / Enable Safe Mode” notification.

When the editor fails to open, your entire design workflow freezes. The good news is that this problem is rarely caused by broken page content; instead, it is almost always caused by server memory exhaustion, third-party addon script collisions, or strict security firewall rules. In this tutorial, we outline the definitive step-by-step checklist to troubleshoot and fix Elementor editor loading errors in 2026.

Why Does the Elementor Editor Get Stuck on the Loading Screen?

When you click “Edit with Elementor”, WordPress initiates an internal iframe, executes dozens of JavaScript assets, and queries the WordPress REST API and admin-ajax.php. If any part of this chain breaks, the editor hangs. Here are the most frequent causes:

  • Insufficient PHP Memory Limit: Elementor requires a minimum of 256MB of PHP memory (and 512MB if you run WooCommerce or multiple addon plugins).
  • Third-Party Plugin Conflicts: Poorly coded Elementor addons, optimization plugins, or slider widgets throwing fatal JavaScript errors inside the editor.
  • Cloudflare Rocket Loader or Aggressive Minification: Rocket Loader attempts to execute Elementor’s visual builder scripts asynchronously, corrupting the editor’s initialization sequence.
  • Mixed Content (HTTP / HTTPS Mismatch): If your site URL is configured with https:// but your editor tries to load canvas assets over insecure http://, modern browsers will block the iframe.

Fix 1: Increase PHP Memory Limit in wp-config.php

By default, many standard hosting servers allocate a meager 64MB or 128MB of memory to PHP scripts. This is insufficient for modern visual builders. To raise your limit to 512MB:

Connect to your server via FTP or File Manager, edit your wp-config.php file, and paste this line right above the /* That’s all, stop editing! */ line:

define( 'WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '512M' );
define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '512M' );

Verify the change by going to Elementor > System Info in your dashboard. Check that the memory limit now displays 512M with a green checkmark.

Fix 2: Switch the Editor Loader Method

Elementor provides an internal mechanism designed specifically for hosting environments with restricted server configuration rules or mod_security conflicts:

  1. Navigate to Elementor > Settings in your WordPress admin menu.
  2. Click on the Advanced tab.
  3. Find the option titled “Switch Editor Loader Method”.
  4. Change the dropdown setting from Disable to Enable.
  5. Click Save Changes and try reopening your page in Elementor.

This setting changes how Elementor handles the editor iframe, bypassing many common server-level script execution restrictions.

Fix 3: Enable Safe Mode to Isolate Conflicting Addons

If the editor is still stuck, Elementor’s built-in Safe Mode will quickly isolate whether a third-party plugin or your active theme is responsible:

  • Go to Elementor > Tools > Safe Mode.
  • Toggle the switch to Enable and save changes.
  • Safe Mode creates an isolated debugging environment that loads Elementor without loading any third-party plugins or active theme functions. It only affects administrators and is completely invisible to front-end visitors.
  • Try editing the page. If the editor opens instantly in Safe Mode, you have confirmed that an external plugin or theme is causing the conflict.
  • Deactivate your Elementor addon packs (Essential Addons, Ultimate Addons, Crocoblock, etc.) one by one until you find the exact culprit.

Fix 4: Regenerate Elementor CSS & Data Files

Corrupted CSS cache files can prevent the builder from rendering styling rules correctly. In your WordPress dashboard:

  1. Navigate to Elementor > Tools > General.
  2. Click the “Regenerate Files & Data” button.
  3. Click the “Sync Library” button right below it to refresh widget templates and cloud assets.
  4. Purge all cache from your caching plugin (LiteSpeed Cache, WP Rocket) and browser.

Fix 5: Turn Off Cloudflare Rocket Loader for Admin Pages

If your website is connected to Cloudflare CDN, Rocket Loader is notorious for breaking Elementor. Rocket Loader defers the loading of JavaScript until after HTML rendering, which halts Elementor’s visual builder scripts.

To fix this without disabling Rocket Loader globally, create a Cloudflare Page Rule or Configuration Rule:

URL Pattern: *yourdomain.com/wp-admin/*
Setting: Rocket Loader -> Disable
Setting: Auto Minify -> Disable
